Part 1: Turn On WhatsApp End-to-End Encrypted Backup

  1. Step 1 Open the WhatsApp menu, visit your profile page, and select Chats.

  3. Step 2 From the Chats menu, open Chat backup, then select End-to-end encrypted backup. If this protection is off, tap TURN ON to begin setup.

  5. Step 3 Tap GENERATE YOUR 64-DIGIT KEY. On the following screen, choose USE 64-DIGIT ENCRYPTION KEY INSTEAD to use an encryption key rather than a password.

    Before you continue, capture this page and store the screenshot somewhere secure.
  7. Step 4 Once the key is saved, tap I SAVED MY 64-DIGIT KEY, followed by CREATE. After the feature shows On, tap BACK UP to begin an encrypted backup.

Part 2: Reset a Forgotten WhatsApp Encryption Key

  1. Step 1 Open your profile, select Chats, and then open Chat backup.

  3. Step 2 Choose End-to-end encrypted backup and tap TURN OFF. When prompted to select a reason, choose I lost my encryption key.

  5. Step 3 Verify your identity with biometric authentication or your device PIN. Once encrypted backup is disabled, use the instructions in Part 1 to create a new 64-digit key.
